Teach children about the love of God

When I was 13, I took a little girl that I regularly babysat, trick or treating for Halloween since her mom was working. At one point, although I could still see her, she could not see me while she was in the throng of kids knocking on a door.

A look of sheer terror washed over her face and she started running in panic searching for me.

At first, I just watched her thinking it was about getting more candy, until she burst into tears. When I called her name, she ran straight to me and wouldn’t let go of my hand for the rest of the night.

This little girl was only 6 at the time, but she had already suffered abandonment from her father and other male figures. Her mother was very distracted so would forget her at the bus stop or other places. I was the only steady figure in her life.

To lose me would have been to lose the only secure attachment figure at that time. And it was terrifying to her.

Way too many people try to scare children and adults to accept Christ by telling them they will burn in hell.

Yes, I have read the Scriptures and what it says about hell. It sounds terrible.

But what’s worse is thinking that there could actually be a time when God would turn His back on me.

What’s terrifying is thinking there could actually be a time when I call out His name.
When in panic, I search for Him, but He is not there.

Teaching your children about God is about teaching them His love for them.

That their Heavenly Father is the only parent they can ever rely on.

His Word is the truth and He speaks to us through it.

Don’t teach your children fear about the fires of hell.
Teach them to fear separation from the only One who loves them.
The horrifying pain of being separated from the only One who cares for you.

“But, I will reply, ‘I never knew you. Get away from me, you who break God’s laws.’” Matt. 7:23

“They will be punished with eternal destruction, forever separated from the Lord and from His glorious power.” 2 Thes. 1:9
