Trained to Worship At The Altar of Sports, Part 3

The husband is as Christ (Eph 5:23). In what possible scenario is Christ going to be taking kids to a sports tournament on the Sabbath? And we know that even as a pre-teen, Jesus was drawn to His Father’s House (Luke 2:49).

Scripture makes it clear that “the heart is deceitful above all things and desperately wicked”. Keeping the Sabbath holy is on a list with not cheating on your spouse, not murdering, not stealing!

It is wrong for men, who are called to be leaders of their homes, to not be the one taking their family to fellowship with their church. To not be the one who sees the need for rest and honor what Scripture plainly writes. To not be the one teaching their children physical and spiritual discipline.

Some call me a Pharisee but I say Jesus came to fulfill the law. Thankfully and graciously we do not live like those in the OT. But when we study life back then and what God called for, we know that he did not command those laws for Him, but for us. We need a thoughtful study of why God created such laws.

And for wives whose husbands don’t feel the same conviction about Sabbath? This is where women and mothers must take the lead. In the same way if my husband told me to murder or steal, I would never submit to that. I will not submit to forgetting the Sabbath. I’m not stupid. Like Abigail who immediately understood the ramifications of her husband’s foolishness and subverted it, we must do the same. Like Timothy, who’s faith came from his mom and grandma, our children must have someone who stands in conviction.

And I am not going to say it is easy. For us, it was a tumultuous ride this conviction called for. But I can tell you that it was 1000% worth it.

Then is going to church just about passing on the faith to our children? I will tell you that it is not. It’s also good for their mental health. When God tells us to do certain things, it is always for our good.

  1. I love this and feel the same way about sports on Sunday’s. It’s nice to know that I’m not alone. Would love to to know how you navigated that over the years. Looking forward to the next part.
